Overview

Kondus Valley is located in the Ghanche district of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The valley is bordered by China to the north and India to the east. The current population of the valley is approximately 6,900 people. Lachhat Valley, which shares parts of its terrain with the Siachen Glacier, is also located in this region. This less-visited and less-explored area of Baltistan features towering heights, with only a few peaks under 7,000 meters. The region is hard to access and difficult to inhabit, as the altitude causes the oxygen levels to thin significantly, especially in the Kondus Glacier. In fact, the Kondus Glacier is one of the few glaciers in the world that has turns. Additionally, this area is home to the world's largest glacier outside of the polar regions, the Siachen Glacier. It’s truly an extraordinary experience.

“Villagers in the Saltoro and Kondus Valleys no longer see expeditions. These eastern valleys contain some of the finest, pristine granite towers in Baltistan. The towers above these ascents will remain for another generation of climbers.” These words were spoken by John Mock when the area was closed until 2000 due to the Pak-India conflict over the Siachen Glacier. Since its reopening, tour companies have been successfully organizing groups to visit the region. The area is home to numerous peaks, such as the 7,742m Saltoro Kangri I, 7,705m Saltoro Kangri II, 7,380m Sherpi Kangri, and 7,100m Sherpi Kangri II, along with many other prominent pinnacles. This region also provides easy access to other significant peaks, including Link Sar (7,041m), K-6 (7,281m), K-7 (6,934m), Chogolisa I (7,668m), and Chogolisa II (7,654m).
