Rock climbing in the Karakoram can be imagined as exhilarating. Unfortunately, most of the rock quality is not good, but when it is, you can find solid granite, which is certainly ideal for rock climbers. The well-known areas for rock climbing in northern Pakistan are Baltistan, where one can find some of the highest-quality rocks. The areas in Baltistan are in the Baltoro Region along the Baltoro Glacier, Snow Lake, Charakusa Valley, Kondus & Saltoro Valley, and Nangma Valley. Some of the well-known rock formations are Baltoro Muztagh and the Trango Towers, which are the Karakoram’s most famous peaks. In close proximity are other colossal spires, such as the Cathedral Towers, Uli Biaho, and Shipton Spire. There are other areas, such as Charakusa and Nangma Valleys in the Masherbrum Muztagh, which are considered a big-wall climbing haven. The Nangma Valley is home to Amin Brakk, the Great Tower (5800m). The Charakusa Glacier is also excellent, with K7 being the most famous. These valleys have attracted many climbers over the last decade or so, and there are already various ‘classic’ routes. New routes are being established every year in these areas. In the Hunza & Nagar region along the famous Karakoram Highway, high-quality rocks are abundant, and among them, the most famous formations are Lady Finger and Pumori Chhish.
